Super Mario Bros. is the Most Wanted Video Game Movie, Poll Finds

In a poll representing the nation, more interest is shown in a new Super Mario Bros. movie adaptation than any other gaming franchise.

Now that the idea of video game movies isn't immediately scoffed at anymore, many are tinkering with which will be the next franchises to receive movie adaptations in the future. To the surprise of some, it turns out that the most wanted video game movie right now is the Super Mario Bros. franchise.
In a new poll from Hollywood Reporter/Morning Consult, many gamers and moviegoers voiced their opinions on which should be the next game franchises to receive film adaptations. Among the franchises selected, the Mario franchise was voted as the most wanted video game movie adaptation.

The poll was conducted among 2,200 adults in the U.S., of which 44% were either "very" or "somewhat" interested in a Super Mario Bros. movie adaptation. Falling just behind the Mario franchise were the Pac-Man  and Mario Kart franchises, both tying at 37% of adults saying they were "very" or "somewhat" interested in a movie adaptation of either.

The interest in these video game movie adaptations was equally distributed among men and women. Further, African-Americans had widely expressed more interest in the development of a Super Mario Bros. film, Mario Kart film, and Pac-Man film. Tyler Sinclair, VP of Morning Consult, said that this shows the yearning of consumers for game movie adaptations. Further, this will send a signal to studios that may have been previously hesitant to develop video game films.
The poll included other video game franchises that generated some interest in film adaptations. Just behind Pac-Man and Mario Kart was the Donkey Kong franchise at 36% of responders saying they were "very" or "somewhat" interested. After, Donkey Kong came Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Tetris, Halo, and more. On the poll, the series that generated the least amount of interest in a video game adaptation was Starcraft.
It's likely to come as little surprise that people want more video game film adaptations. However, it does appear that 1993's live-action Super Mario Bros. film has either been forgiven or forgotten by many. As well, there are young generations of Mario fans who may not be aware of the panned movie and want to see Mario on the silver screen.
