A new Apex Legends update goes live today, and the changes made to Crypto and Gibraltar are just some of the balance tweaks included.
Today sees the start of Apex Legends’ next limited-time event, titled System Override. This comes courtesy of a new update that was added to the game by Respawn Entertainment, and while the System Override event itself may be the main addition, the update also brings with a few key changes to a number of Apex’s Legends.
Of the characters that have been affected, Crypto is the one that benefits most. These days, many feel Crypto ranks low on the current Apex Legends tier list, due to how the ability to control his drone leaves Crypto himself immobile while using it, resulting in an overly passive playstyle. Today’s update does address this a little by making it so his primary weapons automatically reload while operating the drone, that way players are can get back into the action faster once they switch back to Crypto.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Gibraltar, whose defensive capabilities have been buffed in recent months to the point that he is arguably Apex’s most powerful character, even after today’s update. With the update, though, his Gun Shield has had its health reduced from 75 to 50, which should make it a little easier for players to go one-on-one against him.
In addition to Gibraltar’s Gun Shield, Bloodhound’s Eye of the Allfather tactical ability has also been slightly nerfed. While its activation time has been doubled from four seconds to eight, this is balanced out by giving it three times the scanning range and an extra second of scan time. These changes, according to Respawn, are designed to encourage players to use the ability for scouting out enemies ahead of combat instead of during a fight.
Outside of the character changes, the update has made a few other noticeable tweaks to Apex Legends’ gameplay. Grenades are now limited to one per inventory slot (a move meant to prevent late-game spamming), while the number of standard ammo stacks and health shield items per slot has similarly been reduced. To make up for it, the default inventory size has been increased by two slots, and the extra slot count of each backpack upgrade has been increased to match.
Only time will tell if players are ultimately on board with these changes, but for now they can see how they affect the game in the System Override event’s limited-time mode, Deja Loot. This mode offers a twist on the typical Apex gameplay by removing all elements of randomness, which means every match will feature the same loot in the same locations, and every day the circle locations will switch between different fixed points. World’s Edge will be the map for this mode this week, but the second week will have it take place in Kings Canyon.
